Looking Under the Hood of this WordPress Blog Website – What’s that Widget/Theme/Plug-IN?

Magic

I've been on Wordpress for over two years and I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Wordpress. Did I mention I LOVE it? The platform is free. They'll even host it for you for free if you don't mind having a .wordpress.com in your URL. If you want your own URL, there are many website hosts that are affordable and many have a Wordpress install/hosting plan. Cheap, and affordable. Most of the plug-ins are free, and they are FANTASTIC. If you don't know what a plug-in is, it's something that extends the reach/functionallity of your website - without YOU having to do any programming. You just install, you might have some minor settings to set, and VOILA. It's working. There are many free themes. You can shape it and mold it whatever way you want with little programming knowledge needed. So many choices! Did you often wonder - I wonder what plug-in THAT is? Or I wonder what wordpress theme that is? Or how do they do that? I'm going to attempt to map out all of … [Read more...]

Why I Write, I’m a Genie and Granting Wishes!

Heart of Hearts

I started my “adult” life very practically. My dreams of being a rockstar or famous author (either one would have worked out wonderfully for me!) had been put on hold in order to chase a college education, be practical, and make enough money to pay the bills. I listened to the practical, guiding voice of my father, and entered college – majoring in the most practical of all majors, accounting. 12 years later, my practicality had brought me to the top of my game – I was employed at one of the largest firms in my industry, holding an import title and a cushy job. I was well liked, successful at what I did, and a superstar in the company. A GREAT gig by all means, until one day I found myself thinking: I would much rather poke myself in the eye with this pencil than sit through another one of these financial meetings... I really didn't want to poke my eyes out, so the only other choice was to correct what made me feel the way I did. So, I began making a series of changes that … [Read more...]

I’m Slowly Turning Into My Mother and It’s Probably The Best Thing – EVER.

Moms come in all shapes and forms and mommy styles. When I say mommy styles - I mean the way you raise your kids. Boy, I sure wish I knew that when I first started. Growing up, I had a Mormon girlfriend. Whenever I was invited to her house, it was like heaven. Everything was neat and orderly. They had 7 kids in the family as did my family, but that was where the similarities ended. Whereas my household was chaotic, noisy, and crowded, something in their household made their home life just hum along. I concluded that it was her mom. Things at her house went like this: We would all come home from school, and when I was invited, I would just go to her house after school. We would enter the house from the back into a perfectly neat and orderly mud room. In the mudroom, we took off our shoes/boots, and hung up our coats. Their was a cubby hole for each member of the family so that coats, shoes and mittens did not get lost. There were even extra cubby holes for guests - like me. I … [Read more...]

Weekly Inspirations: AKA OMG, WTF’s, Cry-your-eyes-out, eat-your-heart-out or Whatev’s…December 4th, 2011

So, a while back, I was doing weekly FYI, but that just didn't seem exactly my style. So, it just kind of hung there and I haven't really done anything "weekly" since. Then I changed my approach and started looking - I mean REALLY looking at all the people I follow on Twitter. 4 words: AH.MAZ.ING.NESS! Seriously, people are truly amazing about what they share. And the sad thing is, some of these people aren't getting the recognition that they should. This is the truly AMAZINGNESS that you're probably missing out on. Some are OMG. Others are like, WTF? And still others are so good you just sit there crying your eyes out, some are eat-your-heart-0ut adorable, and some are just WHATEV - but with attitude. And that's why I'm renaming my weekly sharing series to: Weekly Inspirations: AKA OMG, WTF's, Cry-your-eyes-out, eat-your-heart-out or Whatev's...December 4th, 2011 Remember the movie Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore? This is the reality version. Except that it's not … [Read more...]

WHY Advocating for your Chronically Ill Child – with school and caregivers – is CRUCIAL to their livelihood

It does not have me

I am a mother of a chronically ill child. My daughter is 16 years old, and has been living with Lupus since she was diagnosed at the age of 5. Having Lupus is not the end of the world. But, your do need to prepare the rest of the world on how to interact/what to expect of your child if they have a chronic illness that may affect their interactions, abilities, access, and quality of a school education or level of care. WHY is advocating for your chronically ill child to the school and caregivers so crucial? It can make the difference between "bearable" and "natural." For children, and they TRULY want is love, acceptance, and understanding. They don't want to be "different." Advocating, in this sense, means to make things easily understood so that it is readily accepted and natural. As a parent, you can't let the disease define your child. YOU must define the disease, and let YOUR child shine through.   Once your child can shine through, it is easy to get and give love, … [Read more...]

Worried about the “Terrible Two’s?” The TEENAGE years last 7 years Y’ALL. GOOD LUCK.

I've been doing a LOT of reading lately. Reading blogs left and right. And you know what I've found? There are a LOT of mommy blogs out there. A LOT of them. OH, your kids are SOOO cute, and they say the MOST adorable things, and they have the cutest clothes, and look, little Jimmy just kissed his new baby sister... and blah blah blah and BAH humbug to you! Just kidding on the BAH humbug. But seriously now, I'm a mommy too - of teenagers. 16 & 18 to be exact. Where are all the blogs that deal with all the cute things teenagers say? Showcase what teenagers do? Where are all the blogs that make you go ahhh, "how cute? teenagers can do that?" I need some inspiration to make it through MY day too. Where are all those inspirational mommy blogs-of teenagers? I'll tell you where: NO WHERE. And why? When people ask me how old me kids are, I smile and tell them, 16 & 18. AND THEN they proceed to tell me: "You're so lucky you don't have to change diapers or worry about … [Read more...]

Sometimes LIFE happens, and sometimes, you kill something…

Ginger plant? Not sure. And NOT sure why it has "testicles." Figures. That must represent my male teenager.

Last year, I had a friend of mine, who is certified in feng shui, come over and help me with the feng shui in my home. LUCKILY, she said that my home laid out pretty well, and I wouldn't have to correct too much in the ways of "bad feng shui." THANK the COCK of JUPITER (OK, I've been watching too much SPARTACUS > and if you haven't, you TOTALLY should!), because my husband already thinks I am looney, and if I had to tell him "honey, could you please relocate the bathroom to the opposite corner of the house - because it's bad feng shui" one more time, I think he *might* just divorce me. This is usually when I remind him, "don't forget, I one DAMN hot bitch." I *usually* get what I want until the next time I ask him something that seems ridiculous at first blush. Anyway, I digress. So my feng shui friend asks me, "Do you have any problems? Sometimes we can address problems in your life by re-directing the feng shui in your home." Well, since you mention it, I have these … [Read more...]

Weekly Inspirations: AKA WTF’s, Cry-your-eyes-out, eat-your-heart-out or Whatev’s…November 21st, 2011

So, a while back, I was doing weekly FYI, but that just didn't seem exactly my style. So, it just kind of hung there and I haven't really done anything "weekly" since. Then last week, I started looking - I mean REALLY looking at all the people I follow on Twitter. 3 words: AH. MAZ. ING. Seriously, people are truly amazing about what they share. And the sad thing is, some of these people aren't getting the recognition that they should. So I decided to keep share the AMAZINGNESS I found by checking out who I was following on twitter. At first, I thought I would call it my weekly inspirations, but I didn't want anyone to think that this was some sort of barfy inspirational quotes that I found on the internets somewhere. This is the truly AMAZINGNESS that you're probably missing out on. Some are WTF? Others are so good you just sit there crying your eyes out, others are eat-your-heart-0ut adorable, and some are just WHATEV - but with attitude. So, MY mom sent ME a full-size mannequin – what’s YOURS done for YOU lately?

Mannequin 001

So, my mom sent me a full-size mannequin. I don't even know what to say, so perhaps a picture: I put her in the garage, because why would anybody in their right mind need a mannequin in their home? The operative phrase here is in their right mind. My mom must have been using her LEFT mind - the one she LEFT behind when she called me to say: (True Story, NO JOKE) Mom: Bloomingdale's is having a sale on their mannequin's. They are beautiful. Do you need one? Me (bewildered???): What's on sale at Bloomingdale's? Mom: Mannequins. They are turning over the mannequin's and getting new ones. The mannequin's are beautiful, and there's nothing wrong with them! Me (still bewildered): Did you say mannequin's? Mom: Oh, you have to see them. They have *real* eyelashes and the fingers are just beautiful. I think you need one. Me: Did you just hit your head? Mom: honey, I perfectly fine. I just think you could do so much with her. You're just so talented that way. Me: … [Read more...]
